Working with San Pedro in combination with Ayahuasca is a powerful compliment in our healing program. The way in which we work with San Pedro will brings greater direction and deepen the opening process in preparation for the Ayahuasca Ceremonies.
ABOUT SAN PEDRO RETREAT CEREMONIES
The Heart Opener
San Pedro, or Huachuma in native Quechua language, is a medicine that can be used to help us perceive our self-created barriers and limitations. San Pedro is a medicine that is commonly known as ‘the heart opener’. It greatly aids us in opening and reconnecting with this important energetic centre, along with the entire cosmos and other spiritual dimensions.
San Pedro is often underestimated as a powerful plant medicine, due to its gentleness. However, we have found San Pedro to be incredibly powerful and profound. In our opinion and based on our experience, there are few limits if any to its capacity to help us heal. Acceptance, love, and gentleness towards oneself and others are often the results of working with this very important master plant teacher.
In the context of this retreat the San Pedro Ceremony takes a role as an introduction of sorts for retreat participants. We find that drinking San Pedro in preparation for the main core of ceremonial work with Ayahuasca can be a beneficial and very complementary combination. San Pedro can help us to connect with our true nature and to our heart centre in a very powerful way which for many aids to bring greater clarity to their true reasons for being on a retreat such as this.
The retreat San Pedro Ceremonies take place under the guidance of the Huachumero Bernhard Karshagen. Bernhard’s ceremony and technique is non-traditional and very therapeutic in style. The ceremony is a day of solitude and introspection and the only communication that participants have is with Bernhard himself. Bernhard has a very beautiful mind and an extremely sharp intellect. His wisdom and insight help us to navigate the energies of the day and the processes which arise in Ceremony – bringing clarity and flow to the healing process. Outside of Spirit Plant Journeys Retreats Bernhard works in his own healing space down the road named Ubuntu Ayni.
San Pedro is a cactus which is native to the Andes and is known to have been used by pre-colonial civilisations for up to 3000 years. The active component found in San Pedro is Mescaline and the nature or personality of this plant is perceived by many as the masculine grandfather spirit, it is also described as having the spirit of the hummingbird. The energetic home of San Pedro is the mountains of the Andes and participating in San Pedro ceremony in its native home is a powerful experience. The high frequency vibration of the high mountains is comparable to that of the himalayas and this space and vibration is very conducive to healing and expansion whilst in retreat.
It is a medicine that can be used to help us perceive our self-created barriers and limitations, and greatly aids us in opening and connecting with our hearts. Each ceremony is a reunion with ourselves, Mother Nature and the Divine. It is a medicinal mirror that can help us see where we hold onto self-limiting beliefs and patterns in our lives, gently guiding us toward releasing that which no longer serves us.
San Pedro is often underestimated as a powerful plant medicine, due to its gentleness. However, we have found San Pedro to be incredibly powerful and profound. In our opinion and based on our experience, there are few limits if any to its capacity to help us heal. Bernhard prepares his own medicine with sustainably harvested whole San Pedro cactus from the Huaraz district in Peru, with care, love and gratitude. We also replant all our cactus bases, helping to grow the plant population.
THE HIGH ANDES
San Pedro is a cactus originating from the Andes of Peru and is commonly called Huachuma (or Wachuma) in its native Quechuan. Currently, the earliest recorded shamanic use of this sacred plant dates back over 3,000 years. Today, the San Pedro experience is still an important part of Andean mystical rites though it has been adopted by many people in a non-traditional ceremonial sense as a powerful healing master plant.
WHAT TO EXPECT
Retreat San Pedro Ceremonies
The ceremony begins in the morning between 8.30am and 9.00am. The group gathers in the ceremonial maloca and Bernhard explains certain logistical elements for the day. The medicine is then served to each participant, whereafter the ceremony begins. After the opening ritual, each guest is free to find their own space in the garden to start honouring their process. We ask that all guests refrain from engaging with one another throughout the entirety of the day up until the closing of the ceremony as to respect and give space to each participant’s process. Our main intention is for each person to be present to that within themselves that needs attention and expression.
At around noon, your fast will be broken with a bowl of provided fruit salad.
We close each ceremony at around 5pm with a gratitude based closing ritual in the maloca, followed by a grounding, nutritious meal around the fire. Like most plant medicines, the individual experience of the medicine varies for each guest. It is important to remember that no experience is ever like another and that whatever the medicine gives to you is exactly what was needed for that moment. Bernhard remains present throughout the whole ceremony to assist each individual if anything is required. Providing experienced, grounded advice for navigating the experience and a calming, stable presence.
